The similarity between Biblical Hebrew and Phoenician, as well as some Canaanite words appearing in the letters of Amarna from the fourteenth century BCE, shows that the language of the Israelites did not differ much from that of the Canaanites. Several characteristics are common to the Hebrew and the Canaanite. The words in Deuteronomy 26: 5, "an Aramean about to perish was my father" may suggest that some of the Israelites' ancestors spoke Aramaic and then adopted the Canaanite language, which later became known as Hebrew.
