App Description
Important: the app is currently being revised and adapted to the latest certification lists for 2022. The update should be available by the end of the year.

Knowing plants, distinguishing between botanical families and genera, developing and consolidating knowledge of species – anyone who is more deeply interested in botany wants to go beyond simply recognizing species based on the color of the flowers. With the field botany app, you can train your own species knowledge for 725 species with a total of over 5000 pictures.

The content is based on the examination material of the botany modules of the NABU naturgucker Academy and the certification courses of the Swiss Botanical Society (changes to the certification from 2022 not yet included!). The training module allows you to practice your own species knowledge so that what you have learned is anchored in your memory for as long as possible. The app is not intended to replace real field excursions, but to digitally supplement the learning of species knowledge.

SPECIES LIST & PORTRAITS

725 plants from Switzerland and Germany are portrayed. The list can be filtered by different certificate levels and sorted by scientific names or trivial names.

The species portrait contains information on the morphology and interesting facts about the species, synonyms, family and genus names as well as information about the certificate levels to which the species belongs. Each species is visualized by at least 4 images. In the species portrait, the user can mark the species as a favorite or create an observation for the species.

DETERMINE

A dynamic multi-criteria key allows the plants to be identified based on a simple combination of characteristics. The better the species can be described with characteristics, the more accurate the identification. There are over 70 characteristics for size, flower shape, color, leaf shape, arrangement of the leaves and much more available for determination. With a long click, a pop-up appears with further information or example images for the relevant criterion.

SPECIES TRAINER

The heart of the app allows you to improve your own species knowledge. The sequence of questions is based on an algorithm designed to improve species knowledge and to retain what has been learned.

The learner can choose between two question modules: in the case of multiple-choice selection, five answer options are put together in such a way that, as far as possible, types with similar determination criteria are included in the answer options. The answer options are composed dynamically, so that the same order of types is never available when the question is repeated. When entering the answer, the name (scientific or common name) must be written in a field.

The scope of the training can be defined in the settings (certificate level and optionally also with a restriction to one or more families).

Diligence points and knowledge points provide information about personal progress at all times. The two scores are listed separately in the «My Statistics» menu item. The slider can be used to display the points earned over time.

Ranking list: If you want, you can compare your training level in the ranking with the training level of other users.

DETECTION REPORTS

In the field book, users have the opportunity to create personal observations of a species in order to document the species. Observations are saved with the coordinates and can be exported via email or sent to naturgucker.de. Excursion information can also be recorded for all observations and documentary images can be attached. All of the 75,000 species (not just plants) reported on naturgucker.de are available for reporting finds.

BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE

Families and genera relevant for the certificates are briefly portrayed.

The app is around 700 MB in size and therefore requires sufficient internal storage space.
